Suicide Prevention Trainings

Yamhill County Public Health offers a variety of Suicide Prevention Training that aim to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to assist a person in crisis. Each of these trainings is available to anyone in Yamhill County at no cost. A background in behavioral/mental health is not necessary to be trained in suicide prevention. In fact, it is encouraged for everyone to be trained to recognize warning signs of suicidal thoughts of suicide and how to get someone help.

These trainings also help satisfy one of the requirements to becoming a Mental Health Safe Zone.

The Connect Program

Connect logoThe Connect Program is a response model in the event of a suicide within an organization, community, workplace, school, etc. Known as 'postvention,' these efforts focus on healing and subsequent suicide prevention.

Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First AidAdult Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to the early signs of mental illnesses, substance use disorders, and mental health crises.

  • Duration: 1 session (8 hours) OR 2 sessions (4 hours each)
  • Focus: Mental Illness & Substance Use Disorder
  • Format: Virtual or in-person

QPR teaches participants to use the 3-step 'Question, Persuade, and Refer' framework to recognize the warning signs of suicide, how to offer hope to a person in crisis, and help save a life from suicide.

  • Duration: 1.5 - 2 hours
  • Focus: Suicide Prevention & Intervention
  • Format: Virtual or in-person

The Be Sensitive, Be Brave (BSBB) trainings infuse culture and diversity throughout foundational suicide prevention and mental health workshops. Community members learn to act as eyes and ears for mental health and suicidal distress, and to connect individuals to help or support.

BSBB workshops are designed for helpers for all ages: children, adolescents, adults, & older adults.

This interactive, virtual training does not replace formal suicide prevention trainings. Instead, this training is meant to serve as a low-barrier, accessible entry-level training for the Yamhill County community and provides a basic understanding of suicide prevention and intervention.
